about

October 2016 SAD MAN came into being. Initially it was a side project meant to be an antidote to the more mainstream electronic music I was making as Nimzo-Indian. SAD MAN was meant to represent a noisier more in unwieldy side to my musical personality. The project also occurred at a time when my daughter was diagnosed as going deaf. As such SAD MAN became a outlet and release valve for me. A way to musically come to terms with what was happening.

Over 3 years SAD MAN has released 8 albums, 3 remix albums and 4 improvisation EP’s. A prolific output driven by a healthy/unhealthy appetite for change and musical experimentation.

Over the 3 years SAD MAN has changed. From fuzzy structureless works to more considered dark electronica. In November 2017 SAD MAN did a remix album titled SAD MAN infected by Nimzo-Indian. At this point the musical worlds started to collide and cross pollinate, making it difficult to differentiate one from another.

Over the 3 years SAD MAN music has been played across a variety of radio stations and reviewed in print. These include: BBC Radio 3 - Late Junction, BBC 6 Music - Stuart Maconie Freak Zone, Tom Robinson BBC Introducing Mix Tape, NTS Radio, Resonance FM, ZRadio, Rinse Radio France, Adventures in Sound and Music - The Wire Magazine, Zradio, New New World Radio, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM, Radio Free Matlock, Brum Radio - Sleeve Notes Sessions and Future FM. Reviews include: Electronic Sound Magazine, Monolith Cocktail music blog, Mojo Magazine and the Wire Magazine. SAD MAN would like to say a big thank you to all those Radio DJ’s, producers and writers who have supported him over the last 3 years.

So here we are at 3 years. It’s been quite a journey. Hugely productive, sometimes obsessional and exhausting in equal measure.

It’s been difficult to select 22 tracks from more than 150. I’ve tried to show the musical journey that has taken place over the 3 years as well as showcase tracks that perhaps were less well known alongside those that have gained radio play. Hopefully the balance is about right and gives an interesting insight into SAD MAN chronology, sound and process.

So where next. It’s difficult to know if I have arrived at a fork in the road. These things rarely happen neatly and to time. However, given SAD MAN’s rapid evolution, it would be unlikely to see things standing still. Until next time whatever and wherever that might be!
